The First Woman to Serve as President of Virginia State University

pamela-hammondPamela Valleria Wilson Hammond has been named interim president of Virginia State University. She will begin her new role upon the retirement of Keith Miller, who is stepping down on December 31. When she takes office in January, Dr. Hammond will the first woman to serve as president in the 133-year history of the university.

Since 2009, Dr. Hammond has served as provost of Hampton University in Virginia. Earlier, she was a professor and dean of nursing at Hampton.

Dr. Hammond is a graduate of Tuskegee University in Alabama, where she majored in nursing. She holds a master’s degree in maternal-child nursing from the University of Maryland-Baltimore and a doctorate in urban services from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
