Three Women to Lead Prestigious Professional Associations

Annette Lareau was voted president-elect of the American Sociological Association. She will serve as president-elect for one year and then assume the presidency of the association in August 2013.

Dr. Lareau is the Stanley I. Sheerr Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Lareau previously taught at Temple University in Philadelphia, the University of Maryland, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She is the deputy editor of the journal Sociology of Education and author of the book Unequal Childhoods: Race, Class, and Family Life (University of California Press).

Professor Lareau is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology at the University of California at Berkeley.

Paula K. Shear, professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati, was named president-elect of the Division 40 of the American Psychological Association. Division 40 which is one of the largest sections of the APA, has about 5,000 members. It is devoted to clinical neuropsychology. She will serve a one-year term as president-elect before becoming president in August 2013.

Professor Shear has been on the faculty at the University of Cincinnati since 1997. She is the director of the university’s clinical psychology graduate program. Dr. Shear earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in the joint doctoral program of San Diego State University and the University of California San Diego.

Janet W. Rankin was selected as the next president of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Rankin is professor of human nutrition, foods, and exercise and associate dean of the graduate school at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She has been on the Virginia Tech faculty for 30 years and was promoted to full professor in 1998.

Professor Rankin is a graduate of Duke University. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of California at Davis.
