Summer Camp Seeks to Increase the Number of Women in Film Industry

Girls Make Movies summer camp at Southern Illinois University Carbondale seeks to address gender inequity in the film industry. The camp was organized by women faculty members in the university’s department of cinema and photography.

The six-day camp is held in July. Susan Fellman, an associate professor at SIUC, says the camp provides an opportunity for girls “to become informed about and empowered in making media and developing skills with media at an age where the disparity between young men’s and women’s sense of competency and possibility with regard to such things tends to balloon.”

The camp also serves as powerful recruiting tool to attract women students to the university’s cinema and photography programs.

Some photos from the camp are available here.
